    4th rifle season buck 2009

Sunday, November 15, 2009, 08:21 AM MST [General]

My 4th rifle season buck!!!  I don't have an amazing story like the elk one, other than the fact that this one was one shot, at over 300 yards with my Winchester .270!  What a year!  My closest shot ever and longest shot ever both in the same year!

1st rifle season bull elk hunt, 2009

Thursday, October 15, 2009, 07:17 AM MST [General]

We hunted hard but I got him!  He is a 4 x 6 bull elk. 1st rifle, 2009!   This all happened in a matter of moments...

He charged in from the side as we were sneaking up a meadow.  We turned, and there he was.  I was standing in the middle of a clearing.  Hank whispered "don't move!".  I stood there, 20 feet from him, trembling, I was so excited, nervous and scared!  I could see his nostrils flaring as he tried to smell me and figure out what I was.  I had my gun up and ready, but had the scope turned all the way up from the day before, when I was looking at a bull across a valley that was too far of a shot for me.  I stood there staring at him, and Hank whispered "SHOOT HIM!"  I tried to talk & couldn't.  Then whispered back, " I CAN'T SEE!".  All in one motion, Hank reached over, dialed my scope all the way down and jumped to the side.  I held my rifle, and my arms shook.  I told myself to brace myself, and steadied my arms.  Then my legs shook!  Steady, steady!!!  I looked through my scope, and found the spot.  Finally, I shot!  Got him!  It definitely was a sur-real moment!!! He was a fighter. He is broke off on his right side, as well as along his eye guards. He even has a hole in his scull where he had... been gored by another bull!  What a tough one!  AMAZING!!! I shot him at 20 feet!!!

    Mia,
Good job and Congrats to you. Hear in Cailfornia its hard to draw an Elk tag period, but my wife drew a Tule Elk cow tag and did the job in harvesting her first Elk from 200 yards plus. I'm thinking those backstraps will almost jump onto the BBQ.lol Take care & Aloha
