    Target Practice

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008, 08:44 PM [General]

Last Saturday I took my 7mm RUM to a relatives house for some long range practice.  I need to get in some practice to prepare for my trip to South Dakota this fall.  If you've ever been out west there is no shortage on long shots if you are comfortable and prepared.  They have a 190 yard target and a 325 yard target to shoot at.

A few months back I sent my 6.5 - 20 x 50 Leupold VXIII to Leupold to have target knobs installed.  I also had a BDC (Ballistic Drop Compensator) knob made to replace the target knob.  You need to supply information on the load you are shooting and they make a knob with yardage marks to adjust your zero for the yardage you are shooting.

This trip to the range was my first chance to test out the new knobs.  I first sighted in at 60 yards and zeroed out the elevation and windage knob to zero with simple allen set screws.  I then adjusted the elevation to 200 yards and shot at the 190 yard target and found I was hitting about 4" high.  I made adjustments down until I zeroed on the 190 yard target and then reset the knob to just short of the 200 yard line with the allen set screws.  I readjusted the BDC knob up to 325 yards and shot at the farther target.  WOW, I hit about 2" High and 2" Right.  I fired another 4 shots and put them all within 4.25" of each other.  Needless to say I'm happy with the results so far.  I need to find a range to shoot out to 500 yards to confirm that BDC knob is calibrated correctly.

I still need to finish my 300 WSM load.  I'm still testing powders and OAL seating depth for the bullet.  But if my 7mm RUM keeps performing like it is I will have a hard time using another gun on my trip.

    Hello

    Sunday, April 13, 2008, 07:28 AM [General]

Hi!  My name is Tim and I'm live in southeastern PA.  I live and work all year to hunt deer in the fall.  I am married with two children, a boy and a girl.  I can't wait until they are a little older and start to tag along on some of my outdoor adventures.

I am currently preparing for a hunt in Novemebr to South Dakota, I will have a tag for a whitetail buck and also a tag for a Mule deer buck.  This will be my second trip to South Dakota.  I was there two years ago with a different outfitter and shot a decent 8-Point, or 4-Point as they say out west.   I like going out there because it's a totally different style of hunting than I am used to here in Pennsylvania.  I enjoy the spot and stalk challeneges.  There are not too many places here in PA where you can spot a deer a mile away and go after it without crossing any property boundaries.

I like to reload ammo for my guns and I'm currently working on a load for my 300 WSM I bought last year.  It's fun to try different powders and bullets to find a combination that works well with a particular gun.  I'm all ears if you have any suggestions!  I'll keep you posted.
