This year 2008 Deer season I shot my biggest buck ever. I was hunting a new area In the Sled Springs Unit in Eastern Oregon. It is one of the only areas where you can legally hunt Whitetail Deer in my state. We have 3 species of deer here in Oregon. Mule Deer, Blacktail and Whitetail deer. I specifically put in for this area to hunt the Whitetail. I was driving around trying to find an area to hunt. When I spotted around 15 Mule deer Doe's and yearlings. No bucks were with them that I saw. They didn't spook when I was watching them. The weather had changed to extremely cold in the last few days and I thought that the bucks should be coming into Rut hard with the weather change. I decided to find myself a spot to take a stand along the same trail the does were following. I had only been on stand for around a half hour when along came this buck. I wanted a Whitetail badly and had driven clear across the state to hunt this new Unit. Well when you see the photo you will know why I had to shoot this buck. I shot the buck and it was like he just disappeared. I looked for blood and found only small specs. of blood so I went back to camp and enlisted the help of my partner and my wife. by the time we got back to where I shot the buck it was pitch black out. We tracked the animal until 12 midnight. We were using flashlights and lanterns. We decided to come back in the morning and marked last blood on our GPS's. When we returned we found the buck about 20 yards from where we stopped the night before. He was double lunged but he had traveled approximately 1000 feet down hill to the bottom of the draw and piled up. Hope you enjoyed the story. This buck has not been measured yet but he is 30" wide 5X5 I'll be able to get him scored in about 1 week finally. I can't wait.....
