My First FT Riley KS DOE

     Oct 10, 2008 0530.

Man what an early day. I woke up made a pot of coffee and started preparing my last minute stuff for my morning hunt. I sprayed down my cloths and got some break fast together with my wife. (she was up for work) well I got everything together and headed out to my stand I had put up a week earlier on the side of a great trail I figured would pay off. Well it did.

I got to my stand around 0610 after a pleasant walk through some deep woods and a huge hill I made it there. My deep woods get away here on post. The funny thing is I am about 1 Mile from my home and it is the best place to be right now. I climbed my sticks and settled in for the long hall, I had to place my bow rest and my gear on hooks so I had to get them set I sat down and made sure I could retrieve my bow without making a sound and then I settled in. Oh ya I always put my safety harness on before I do anything after my buddy told me his story I swear by it but that is another story. Well I was all set and sitting there listening to the orchestra of the awakening sounds when 2 doe snuck up from behind me, they came in on my right side and fast I had no clue I could even get my bow down. They where just what I was looking for MEAT for my freezer.  The first one was really worried about something but it wasn't me she was looking around and smelling the air but I was covered and she never had a clue.

The other one was bigger and older and wiser stayed back watching the nervous young one waiting to see what was going on, well nothing that time was going on. They walked on through and I watched them. I was kind of bummed out when they went by and I didn't even have a chance to take a shot. Well about 3 minutes later I heard something coming in front of me so I grabbed my Hoyt and got ready here they come the young one acting the same way and the big one following behind. This time I was ready so I let the little one walk by and start down the trail I told you all about earlier then the nice big one walked out into one of my shooting lanes about 15 to 20 yards to my left and stopped and started to snack.  I drew my bow back lined up the pin and let it rip, THUMP! Is all I heard as the arrow hit her right in the sweet spot right in the heart! She bolted down the trail about 15 yards hit a tree and stopped dead in her tracks and I got to see it all. It was the most awesome thing I have ever done and even right now as I just write about it my heart is beating out of my chest.   I walked up on her and she was the most beautiful animal I had ever seen. So I took some pictures with me phone cam and sent them to my wife and Dad then I gutted her and my son who is 10 years old brought me my game cart and we loaded her on it and headed up the hill to the truck. It was straight up awesome and I don't think I will ever forget the feeling I had when it happened. All the practice and preparing paid off. And it was great.

1st Time with Son In our canoe

Friday, June 13, 2008, 10:07 AM CST [General]

I just want to tell everyone about me and my sons 1st time in our new canoe fishing. All I have to say is that is was awesome! We had a great time. We learned alot yesturday on our first trip in the canoe 1st thing is we need an anchor  we had a great time paddling around the lake but everytime we got to where we wanted to fish we drifted away from our area. 2nd thing we need to get a rack for the top of my truck so I can load it on top by myself. He is a verystrong 10 year old but just not tall enough to help me out some times so we had a comedy session trying toload the canoe. I think it could of made a great video. other than that it was a great day and we didnt even catch many fish just being together made it all worth wild.
