    Antelope & Elk hunt

Wednesday, October 1, 2008, 09:20 AM MST [General]

I have not post in a long while, I have been up in Northern Arizona on a Antelope and Elk hunt. I was successful on both, it started with my Antelope. We had been glassing the flats looking for a buck worth shooting, when we spotted a buck about 900 yards away. We started discussing if it was a shoot and trying to figure out a route to close the distance. The buck knew we were there, but started running at us. This is one time a coyote has actually helped me out on a hunt. The buck stop about 300 yards out and looked our way, then looked to his rear. That is when we picked up movement and it was two coyotes that had chased him my way. Now we were really stating to decide if he was a shooter, the conversion went back and forth for awhile. We did determine he was about average, with above normal mass. The buck was starting to get a little nervous, so I ended the discussions with the shot that dropped him within ten yards of where he stood. Now for my Elk hunt, okay here is the setup. I was shooting my Dream Season set at 70.3 pounds; the arrow was and Radial Weave Pro, with Gateway Rayzr and a Vortex 100 grn/2 inch cutting diameter weighing 368 grns; the rest was the Top Gun Phantom; sight was the Top Gun F35; the stabilizer was the Vibracheck ICON; the quivers was a Top Gun Vertex. The bow I am shooting is right at 312 fps, we work this group of elk from about 5:30 am, but just could not get close enough for the shot. They finally bedded down about 8:15, We were discussing on how to get within range for when the bulls would get up to check the cows from about 160 yards away, trying to come up with a plan. Yes, there was two bulls in the group, but the only one we had a visual sight of was this one. The bigger bull was bedded down just out of sight over the ridge. Oh, we were in a burned out area with very little cover. When around 9:00 am this bull got out of his bed and seemed to be going to be checking the cows a he just turned and came right at us. He got with in about 30 yards, but with the cover I was using I could not take a shot from my knees, so I had to stand up to get over the brush. When I did this he was startled, and bolted, but with a quick cow call he stopped and I took the shot, it was about 45 yards. The bull was hit a little far back, but he only went around 30 yards and piled up. Then we had the job of packing him out the two miles to the nearest road. I had a great time on the hunt and had two friends that came up to help out on the hunts. One for the antelope hunt and another on the Elk hunt, but I did have a week by myself in between hunts. Which seemed to be nice to alone for awhile, got the chance to go out and do some great scouting for my elk hunt.

    Bear Hunting

Wednesday, June 18, 2008, 12:31 PM MST [General]

It was good weekend, I was out bear hunting, seen some good signs and came withing 50 yards of a young male (strawberry blond in color).  Watched him for about five minutes and decided he was not what I was looking for.  I also seen several goulds turkey and took several picture of them, I got within 10 yrds of one flock, just amazing.  I just love being outdoors and seeing wild life.
