An Old Man Who Is A New Hunter.

    Friday, January 4, 2008, 05:55 AM [General]

    Hello....

It isn't true, you can teach an old dog new tricks. At a young 55, I started hunting this year, by the pushing of my son. At first I thought the only thing he'd be dragging out of the woods would be me.

But after some prodding, I agreed, with the stipulation that we would take the required Hunter Safety Course. He agreed.

Well, there we were, a 22 year old and a 55 year old surrounded by 12 year olds. Great! It was the best 2 days that I ever spent learning all I could to be safe. Needless to say, my son and I passed our test with perfect scores. We got our safety card and patch. I felt great!.

My son had already purchased a model 700 Remington (270 caliber), so he had to take me shopping. I purchased a classic Savage 30-06.

We studied those rifles for a great deal of time. Shooting at the Sportsman's club that we had joined. We became rather proficient using the rifles.

A friend of mine, a long time hunter became our mentor. He taught us how to zero in our scopes and how to clean them.. He gave lessons on what types of cartridges to use, shared his equipment, showed us state game lands and helped my son field dress his first deer. He also shared his love of pistols and revolvers.  If you noticed my profile phot.  He helped me pick out that 45-410 Taurus, The Judge"

I owe him a great deal!
