Bought myself a going away gift

    Wednesday, April 1, 2009, 10:49 PM [General]

Well I leave for overseas on Sunday so I picked myself up a gift. After lots of thought over the last few months on a long range rifle for varmit and deer, I decided upon a 25-06 remington. Having my mind set on a single shot rifle I began my search and decided on a H&R Ultra rifle with laminate stock, 26in heavy barrel. I owened a H&R chamberd in .223 a few years ago with great performance. The TC was a consideration but I just couldnt bring myself to spend three times the amount on a rifle that just does'nt look good to me.  Anyways I topped it with a 6x18x44 with target turrets and side adjustable focus. Worked on varmit loads today for 75gr v max, rem lrp, and win 760. Loaded 51gr, 52gr, 53gr, 54gr, 55gr at col 3.100. 55 grain to 53 grain loads were not satisfactory by any means 1 1/2in groups at 100yards, 52grains loads dropped to 3/4in groups at 100yards, 51grain loads produced what I was hopping for, all three shots touching 100yards. Plan to work on a 115grain nos bt load next. Not to shabby for a $250 rifle. This one will be staying around.
