    Celebrity Hunter

    Wednesday, December 10, 2008, 06:49 AM [General]

I was excited to hear that we have a country music celebrity hunting in our neck of the woods!  Mr. George Strait is hunting not 20 miles from our property!!  He is hunting on a large ranch nearby.  Guess he knows where to come for the big bucks!!  No pun intended, of course!  HA HA!

Wishing him good luck.  I hope that he finds himself thouroughly impressed with our amazing Kansas deer!

Hubby's Dad pulls off a double!

    Saturday, December 6, 2008, 11:02 AM [General]

My husband's dad shot two deer this morning up on our lease.  Shot a buck and a doe with his rifle, not two or three minutes apart from eachother!  This was his second morning out since rifle season started.

Hubby and I were about 300 yds north, bowhunting, when we heard two shots go off, and we knew it was on our lease!  We came marching up out of those trees, set on finding out who on earth was shooting on our lease!  Got about half way up the ravine and heard a third shot!  Boy, we were HOT and ready to chew some you-know-what!  We had no idea his dad was going to be out hunting this morning, which, for safety reasons, I wish we would have known ahead of time.  We got up into the field and saw his Dad's truck parked on the road, so we were relieved to know it was him and not someone else.

We went to the area where we figured he was all set up, and could see him down in an open area in the ravine, standing by a tree, taking a rest.  Started to head on down into the trees to talk to him and stumbled up on a buck he'd drug half way up the ravine on his own.  It was the one with one antler we've watched countless times.  We were glad to see it was "Bucky" as we've been calling him, as this little guy has to be the most curious (stupid) buck we've ever observed out in the woods!  We've gotten a kick out of watching him in various spots out on the lease this season.

We look back down at his dad in the clearing and realize he's got another deer down nearby! We trot on down there to help drag her up, as he looked pretty worn out.  Hubby and I drug this doe up and out of the ravine and to the truck, then finished dragging the little buck up as well.  By then, his Dad had caught his breath and he and hubby were able to thrown them up into the truck.  I grabbed their back legs and laid them out, side by side.  I took his Dad's knife and cut into their back legs and tagged them for him, as he didn't look like he was up to climbing up into the truck.  Don't know if it was all the excitement or the physical exertion of dragging deer all by himself, but he was breathing hard!  HA HA!  He made lots of jokes about he was getting too old for all of this!  We told him if he could still shoot, we'd do the haulin and whatnot!  ;)

Let me just tell you, that little buck stunk to high-heaven!  Far worse than either of our bucks smelled this year!  Lordy!

We managed to get a few pics taken to show the granddaughters, then he and Grandma headed off with both deer to the processor.  Boy, he was so excited, and can't wait to get his hands on some of that venison!  We were happy for him, seeing his excitement.  Not much gets him all excited and whatnot these days, so it was good to see that.  HA HA!

    Big Buck Tacos!!!

    Friday, December 5, 2008, 09:19 AM [General]

Well, last night we cooked up the first batch of hubby's big buck.  Grabbed a couple one pound packages of ground venison out of the freezer, browned it, seasoned it, and make the yummiest batch of soft tacos I've had in a while!  It was WONDERFUL!  No "gamey" taste what-so-ever!

I think we'll be enjoying "Big Buck Tacos" pretty regularly for a while, as we had quite a bit of meat from his buck this year.  Of course we will be enjoying some "Small Buck Chili", and "Medium-sized Doe Meatballs" as well!  LOL!  I am especially excited for the backstraps and loins.  Plan on making "Venison Tips" over rice, some enchiladas, spaghetti, stews, soups, caseroles...man, I am getting hungry just thinking about it!

I like the fact that we are giving ourselves and our kids this leaner red meat, without all the chemicals and hormones and antibiotics that much of the beef around here has!  Better quality meat, less fat.  I have had deer that tastes gamey, and I didn't care for it.  But, none of the deer my hubby has ever brought home has ever had a funny taste to it.  Of course, we've purchased half a cow before and had it butchered, and every doggone package of meat we got tasted just awful!  Like a chemical or cleaning solution taste almost!  We sent it back, of course.

Anyhoo, hope you all are enjoying your venison as well!  I know there are a lot of good recipes posted on other blogs that I plan on checking out!

    I believe...

    Friday, December 5, 2008, 08:55 AM [General]

A friend emailed this to me this morning, and I enjoyed it so much, I wanted to post it here to share...

Birth Certificate shows that we were born,

A Death Certificate shows that we died,

    Pictures show that we lived!

    Have a seat . . . Relax . . . And read this slowly.

    I Believe...

That just because two people argue,

it doesn't mean they don't love each other.
And just because they don't argue,
it doesn't mean they do love each other.

    I Believe....
That we don't have to change friends

if we understand that friends change.

    I Believe...
That no matter how good a friend is,

they're going to hurt you every once in a while

and you must forgive them for that.

    I Believe...
That true friendship continues to grow,

    even over the longest distance.

    Same goes for true love.

    I Believe...
That you can do something in an instant

that will give you heartache for life.

    I Believe...
That it's taking me a long time

to become the person I want to be.

    I Believe...
That you should always leave loved ones

with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

    I Believe...
That you can keep going long after you think you can't.

    I Believe...
That we are responsible for what we do,

    no matter how we feel.

    I Believe...
That either you control your attitude or it controls you.

    I Believe...
That heroes are the people who do what has to be done
when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

    I Believe...
That money is a lousy way of keeping score.

    I Believe...
That my best friend and I,

    can do anything,

or nothing and have the best time.

    I Believe...
That sometimes the people you expect

to kick you when you're down,

will be the ones to help you get back up.

    I Believe....
    That sometimes when I'm angry

I have the right to be angry,

but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

    I Believe...
That maturity has more to do

with what types of experiences you've had

and what you've learned from them

and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

     I Believe...
That it isn't always enough, to be forgiven by others.

sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself.

    I Believe...
That no matter how bad your heart is broken

the world doesn't stop for your grief.

    I Believe...
    That our background and circumstances

may have influenced who we are,

but, we are responsible for who we become.

    I Believe...
That you shouldn't be so eager

    to find  out a secret.

It could change your life Forever.

    I Believe...
    Two people can look at

    the exact same thing

    and see something totally different.

    I Believe...
That your life can be changed

    in a matter of hours

by people who don't even know you.

    I Believe...
    That even when you think

you have no more to give,

when a friend cries out to you -

you will find the strength to help.

    I Believe....
    That credentials on the wall

do not make you a decent human being.

    I Believe...
That the people you care about most

in life are taken from you too soon.

    I Believe...

    The happiest of people

    don't necessarily have the best of everything;

they just make the most of everything.
