    Turkey Callin'

    Wednesday, February 4, 2009, 02:11 PM [General]

KBGuy and I were watching a good show last night where a guy was demonstrating a bunch of good turkey calls.  Typically the hubby calls them in for both of us, but I think I'd like to give it a try this season.  I have tried in the past with a box call and a slate call, but the hubby laughed and no birds came, so I am guessing that I didn't do it exactly right!  HA HA!  What do you all recommend as far as turkey calls go?  I think I will start out with the box call, maybe advance on to other methods once I get the feel for it.

Seriously? Did anyone else see this?

I was watching a show on the Outdoor Channel the other day.  A guy was bowhunting black-tailed deer.  He shot him from a blind, at close range, who had come up to the feeder to eat.

YES...that's right.  I said HE SHOT HIM AT THE FEEDER.  Is that HUNTING?

I know many shows that I enjoy watching are not exactly "real-life" hunting scenarios.  However, I keep this in mind, and still enjoy seeing the deer, and learning any tips I can from the hosts that perhaps I can use in my own, more "traditional" hunting experiences.

But THIS, I thought was just such a pathetic display of hunter's sportsmanship and ethics.  Our two oldest daughters, ages 12 and 10 were watching as well, and even THEY knew that this was not exactly "fair chase"!  At least we were able to talk to them about ethics in hunting and use this example to show them what hunting, to our family anyway, IS NOT!

Granted, this guy did nothing illegal, it just seemed so pathetic, and it was just so irritating and infuriating to watch him celebrate shooting a small 4 point deer over a feeder.

To make matters worse, the narrator went on to mention how this hunter had managed to "OUTSMART" this black-tailed deer!

    SERIOUSLY!!??

Since when does outsmarting an animal involve sittin' on your butt in a blind, waiting for an animal to come to a feeder that he probably visits each and every day, then shooting him at close range and gloating over it all for the cameras???

Give me a BREAK!  Did anyone else see this?

Well, the Good Lord has given me something to focus on while KansasBowGuy and I wait impatiently for Spring Turkey Opening Day...The Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk I shared about in my previous post.  I now have TWO teammates to share my journey with!  What an AWESOME start!  I don't know if anyone else will be moved to join us on our endeavor, but the more, the merrier!

Here's a link to my site, where you can track my progress on this big endeavor!!

    3-DAY JOURNEY!!!

    Friday, January 30, 2009, 09:47 AM [General]

With an enthusiastic heart, determined mind and, as many of you would agree, a CRAZY spirit, I am so excited to share with you all that I will be participating in the 2009 Susan G. Komen 3-Day Cancer Walk!

This means that I will be walking 60 miles over 3 days, in hopes of raising a MINIMUM of $3000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Organization! I will be participating in the event in the Dallas, TX area November 6-8th, 2009. Seems like a long time from now right now, but it should give me enough time to finish one of their two training programs so that I am fully prepared for my 3-day endeavor!

And yes, I realize that this will take a little chunk of time out of deer season. But I have a little time to come to terms with that as well! ;)

I have signed up to be a Team Captain, should there be anyone from this area interested. If not, I will be going solo. I know there are a few of you out there who are passionate about raising funds for cancer, as well as a few who don't mind a bit of a physical challenge, so I would love it if anyone wanted to join me!

I participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Kansas City back in August 2008, running a 5K with Lauren...and about 25,000 other runners/walkers! This organization is simply AMAZING, and they really know how to put together a sucessful event! I can't WAIT to see what they have in store for an event like this!

I will be working on my page soon, so be sure to save this link so that you can check back in from time to time to monitor my progress with both the training, as well as with the fundraising goal!

    Wish me luck!

    Angie

    Meet Bullet!

    Sunday, January 25, 2009, 11:52 AM [General]

Just showing off a pup we sent off to his new "forever home" on Friday night!  This handsome guy is a Silver Lab, the first male pup we've had out of our sweet Silver Lab, Remington!  Remington was an AWESOME first-time mother, and we are THRILLED with the pups she and our male Silver Lab, Buddy presented us with this winter!  Isn't he absolutely GORGEOUS?  He will be living here in our hometown with a family we are close to, so it will be fun to watch him grow up and become part of their family as time passes!
