Feeling the pressure of having such a limited amount of time to hunt after today, I did get a tad excited when this guy stumbled out in front of me this evening right before dark. He seemed taller, and once we finally found him, I thought he seemed smaller than I had originally thought. Was only about a 15 yd shot. Arrow stuck in him. He took off and traveled about sixty yds and went down. Had to track him in the dark, and even though I saw where he went down and knew he wasn't too terribly far, it was still quite difficult to find. Blood trail ended about 30 yds from where we found him. Arrow was gone, but had not passed completely through. Didn't take time to find the arrow, as it was getting late. Will do that next time I'm out there. Took out both lungs, even though I feel like the shot went a tad higher than I would like. He has a nice body size, in spite of his small rack. Would be a six point, but one brow tine is completely broken off at the base. Anyway, I was glad to find him, as I shot my first buck with my bow last Fall and after a full day of searching, we never were able to find him. I was sick over it. This guy isn't nearly as nice as the 8 point I shot last year, but he's the first buck I've shot and recovered. I do wish I had more time to be a little more choosy, but with so much going on with the move and the holidays, I guess the pressure got to me a little! ;) We've seen so many spectacular deer this fall and had some truly awesome experiences that we are both grateful for. Hubby and I still have turkey tags, and he still has a doe tag, so with what spare time we do have after the move this week, we will work on filling those. Have a good week!
Went out last night and filled my doe tag before I even entered the woods! Hubby and I were headed into the trees, and at the treeline there were four does grazing. We were able to get in rather close without spooking them. They were all lined up in a row, standing perfectly broadside! Doesn't get any easier than that! I picked out the best-looking one and took my shot! She didn't go far, but I never could find my arrow.
Went ahead and spent a little time in the woods and passed up a smaller six-point buck that I had an easy shot at. That was the only thing we saw the rest of the evening.
Spent this morning out in the woods from sun-up until about 11:00 am. Didn't see or hear much. Bumped a doe on our way in. Saw an 8 point buck on the highway. Saw a 4-point dead on the side of the road. Saw a small doe cross the road in front of us. So they seem to be out and about more than they have been most of the week, which is encouraging!
Will head back out this evening for a couple of hours. This afternoon hubby and kids and I are going to snuggle up on the couch and watch the Chiefs game. Enjoy some lunch, bake some cookies and fix some hot chocolate. Just enjoy some family time. =)
Can't wait to hear how everyone did this weekend!
We will be moving into a different house this week, so my hunting time will be limited. However, I will have some time next weekend, so if I don't get my buck tonight, I have next weekend to work on filling THAT tag!
Hubby and I bumped a MONSTER buck last night on the way in to our hunting spots in the North section of our lease. After we had put on our camo and grabbed our bows, I examined the tree line, as we had bumped at buck in that very same area at the treeline earlier this week. So I checked, or I THOUGHT I did, and saw nothing. So, we headed into the trees. We move forward about 10 yds and I stop dead in my tracks, and staring right at us is the most impressive buck I have ever seen ALIVE and not on display at Cabela's or Bass Pro! HA HA! He stared back for just a second or two and then took off. Hubby only got a brief glance and that was all, but whe he DID see of one side of his rack did impress him considerably! I have searched and searched online this morning (at work) for a pic of a buck with a similar rack, and here is the closest pic I have been able to come up with...(the pic above). Except the one we saw last night wasn't as tall as the one here in this pic. Gets me excited just knowing there's a couple of nice deer around there that we've spotted this week! Now, if we could just be in the right place at the right time... =)
Have spent approx 25 hours hunting since the hubby got his buck last Sunday and have hardly seen a thing! I think the bruiser we saw last night was the third deer we've seen all week. They just haven't been moving.
I am going out again this afternoon/evening and all day tomorrow. I am so hopeful that I will have some pics to post come Monday!!!
Good luck to you all, for those of you who are still waiting on that big one! ;)
