A First for Hunting in Peru

    Monday, June 23, 2008, 09:03 AM [General]

We're in the middle of the Amazon here. The first day we stayed in Lima and had two hours of sleep, but we were the guests of some really wonderful people. We jumped on a plane then to Puerto Maldonado then traveled by boat upriver for five hours.

There was a new guy driving the boat who had never been in the boat before and didn't know the river and crashed on the rocks in the middle of the river after dark. The guy panicked and wouldn't go anywhere then. We sat there for two hours because he thought the lodge would send a rescue team down for us, but they didn't.

So we waited and it was getting really cold, and there were zillions of mosquitoes. So, I explained to him that I've guided on rivers and if he would just listen to what I said ... we had this little spotlight, not much more than a flashlight, and I sat in the front of the 35-foot boat and told him which way to turn. Other people on the boat translated my directions to him and we made it in to the lodge at midnight, through rapids and all kinds of stuff. It was crazy; it was scary actually. But we made it.

The outfitter got in late in the afternoon and we went out the next day and got a capybara first thing in the morning! But, this area where this lodge his has a lot of people and a lot of eco-tourism. After spending some time around this operation, I advised my contacts with the Peru government that this area is probably better left to cater to the eco-tourism crowd. Hunters, I told them, would rather be farther away from people and in more remote areas looking for adventure.

What a beautiful country ... we'll be back on the boat again tomorrow. We're headed now for the whitetail area here in Peru. I will keep you posted.

    Grizzlies Got Away

    Wednesday, June 11, 2008, 10:55 AM [General]

No grizzly bear on my hunt near Terrace, BC with Bolen & Lewis, but did get the one old inland black bear during my hunt with them. We also saw grizzlies every day, but not the right one. I turned down a number of grizzlies, looking for a big, old boar. Unfortunately one never showed, and that's why they call it hunting.

But the country was spectacular, the game plentiful (we saw tons of mountain goats and many black bears), and I really enjoy hunting with these young, talented outfitters.

Home for a day then off to Peru!!

    I'm a Bear Hunter!

    Monday, June 9, 2008, 10:35 AM [General]

We didn't get a grizzly bear, but we saw a lot of black bears again here near Terrace, British Columbia, and I actually shot one! First black bear I've shot since the 90's, even though I've guided to hundreds since then ...

These are inland black bears, and I shot him at about 30 feet. Made a beautiful stalk, great footage and ancient old bear ... probably 12 to 15 years old, 18-plus inch skull and I was thrilled!

We saw a grizzly the other day up on a sidehill, but it wasn't possible to get at him, plus it wasn't a big one. Then, the next day we saw a good grizzly, but we didn't go after it because it was a female I was pretty sure. Saw tons of mountain goats. This is the best mountain goat area in the world as far as I know.

So, we're still hunting away on the grizzly bears. Long days because it's light until almost 11 at night and gets light again at 4 in the morning. So, we're tired! Stay tuned, I'll let you know if I get a grizzly!
