One month from today will be the first day of the 2010 deer season, here in the lowountry of SC. Since the 15th of August falls on a Sunday, the season will probably actually open on the 14th, even though it is legal to hunt on Sundays in SC.
The rifles have been sighted in, the shotguns have been patterned, and next week the summer/fall food plots will be planted. All of the tree stands and tower blinds have been set, and all that is left is to decide where to put the ground blinds and the corn piles. Based on the sign I have already seen, I've got some pretty good ideas about where to place them.
According to the tracks, there are a few pretty big bucks around right now, and several does are moving around with some fawns as well as a few yearlings, so the activities should be interesting. My game cameras are on the fritz, so no pictures yet. I'll probably end up buying a new digital camera, now that I have a computer. My old ones were both film cameras, so it's probably time to upgrade anyhow.
As the anticipation grows, both my son and I are getting more and more fired up. I can barely wait for that opening morning, getting deep into the swamp and hearing the hounds trailing and then jumping a deer. Hopefully, it will be one of those big bucks that evaded us last season, and even more so, hopefully the hounds will push it to my son. I really want him to get a wall hanger this year. He has two deer to his credit, as well as one that he shot and I finished last year. He is 13, and he wants a rack for his bedroom wall. It would really make my day if he could get a good one on the first day of the new season. After the dog drives in the AM, we will take the rifles and go to a tree stand or a tower blind for the late afternoon hunt somewhere here on our home place. A little less adrenaline packed, but still a heart pumping experience if something good walks out of the thick cover.
Anyhow, that's the plan for opening day. The rest of the season will be hound hunts every Saturday and every holiday, with rifle hunts every Sunday through Friday until the last day, which will be Jan. 1st. Plenty of time to stock up the freezer, donate some meat, and hopefully get a couple of good racks for the wall.
Here's best wishes to everyone with their season, regardless of how you hunt, where you hunt, and what you hunt with. Be safe, and good luck!!!!!
