Freedom Hunters makes outdoor dreams come true for our troops

Tuesday, August 25, 2009, 07:59 PM MST [General]

Saluting the noble work of our courageous men and women of the Armed Forces is our mission. Freedom Hunters would like to reflect the outdoor community’s appreciation to the troops by taking select active duty and combat veterans on outdoor adventures. With help from conservation groups, outfitters, corporations and land owners, Freedom Hunters will honor individuals from all branches of the Military. It is with immense pride and enthusiasm that Freedom Hunters will carry on the American tradition of hunting and fishing with active military personnel across the United States.

REMEMBERING THE BRAVE: For the Gold Star Families that have sacrificed all, we are working on retreats and individual opportunities to remember the brave. Families that know the full price of Freedom hold a special place in our heart. We had the privilege to share stories about PFC Kyle Bohrnsen with his family and friends. Before joining the Army, Kyle guided for Big M Outfitters and hunted the mountains around his family’s ranch. This gentle giant of a man loved his country as much as he loved elk hunting. Our goal is to make sure these these heroes are never forgotten.

HONORING THE WOUNDED: We are proud to show our gratitude to Purple Heart recipients. Many may not have the same physical abilities as when they joined the service, but heart and determination is something that still drives these men forward. We joined with Silver Spur Outfitters in Rifle, CO to take SSG Joshua Olson on an elk hunting adventure. SSG Olson is one of the Army’s rising stars in Olympic style shooting. The shooting community will be hearing from Josh for sometime to come.

WELCOME THEM HOME: Long deployments away from the fields and streams can be hard on those that love our tradition of hunting and fishing. Some servicemen can miss several seasons between training before the deployment and the actual deployment. In an effort to boost moral, we select a few individuals who are currently deployed to go on dream adventures when they return home. PFC Joshua Reilly was one of those we where able to honor. Thanks to a generous donation by a Vietnam veteran and with the help of Llano Outfitters in Wyoming, we took Joshua on a archery Pronghorn hunt.

FAMILIES OF THE DEPLOYED: The military families left behind during deployment will have a opportunity to escape to the woods. Around 180,000 military kids have parents who are deployed. Often the struggles of everyday life, do not allow these kids a chance to go on adventures in the wild. Through camps and volunteer efforts, we hope to offer Military Families an outdoor experience to lift spirits and boost moral. We were able to take young Matt Burge on his first elk hunt while his father SFC James Burge had been deployed for 13 months. The Elk Research Institute and one of their donors gave Matt a chance to bring home the meat and a nice rack. Hearing how proud James and squadron felt made the trip even more memorable for our team.
