    Finally Deer down

    Sunday, November 8, 2009, 03:21 PM [General]

Well doe week opened yesteday. Got invited to a friends lease and hit the woods for a morning hunt. Spotted 13 doe's on the field and started the stalk from 500 yards out. Got withing 300 before they began to feed into the swamp away from us. I picked out a doe and took a shot at 280 yards and wouldn't ya know it I shot high right over her back. While watching a few more deer come out of the swamp a nice buck came running out chasing some does before going back in and making a rub on the edge of the swamp. So no deer for the morning hunt.

The afternoon hunt was more productive. We walked a little over a mile to the spot we had see all the deer in the morning and set up behind a pile of rocks abour 200 yards from the field we had sat on during the morning hunt. At 4pm we had 14 doe's come out to our right but were in the same spot we had been sitting in the morning. I was beginning to think we werent going to get a shot and decided to change up spots. About that time a loan doe stepped out from behind a dirt pile and began to feed toward our position.  I hit her with the rangefinder and ranged her at 122 yards. It was getting dark so I decided to go ahead and take her since I didn't have any meat in the freezer and hadn't shot a deer in a while.

I take the shot and hit her in the neck dropping her in her tracks. Thinking she's down we wait for the rest of the does to feed our way so my buddy can take one. My doe begins to try and stand up so I decide to take another shot to put her down. Just as i get her in my scope I have a huge brown spot blur my scope.  I pull the scope away and see the same buck from the morning hunt.

Got a shot at 148 yards and busted him. He ran 50 yards and piled up in the field.

Now we can go out and try to put another one down, since we are tied with a 7 point each for the year...
