So amazing, I was able to take a long Cessna flight that provided the birds-eye level view of the San Francisco open spaces (not to mention the cities too). It was really fun to see all the trails from 1000 feet above them. It was probably too hot for a lot of hikers and things looked pretty empty from above. But the open spaces are substantial and a real relief from all those people down there. I hope to do this again sometime soon, but I'm not a pilot so...we'll see.
Not a fish tale - Oaklanders named the rainbow trout
Friday, July 25, 2008, 09:36 PM [General]
I just discovered that rainbow trout were identified and named based on fish from Redwood Regional Park, in Oakland! This is about 10 minutes from my home, and I walk along this stream trail all the time.
In 1855, Dr. W. P. Gibbons, founder of the California Academy of Sciences, was given three specimens obtained from the creek. He described and assigned them the scientific name Salmo iridia.
And the rest, they say, is history.
