    Bear in hibernation

    Thursday, July 24, 2008, 02:24 PM [General]

This Grizzly was in hibernation in Feb. of this year when I stumbled on his den. I was trapping lynx near Saint Mary's, Alaska and I followed a set of lynx tracks that took me right past his den. After a few weeks of working up enough nerve (or stupidity) I got this picture of his while he was awake. I had a lot of fire power ready to go just in case, but the bear didn't seem bothered. I left him alone for the rest of the winter but I did keep an eye for tracks coming out of the den in the spring because I wanted to take my first grizzly bear. I am from PA but I moved to Alaska right after I graduated college in 2006. I came just for things like this! I did some unbelievable things in 2 years in Alaska but finding this bear had to be one of them. Anyway, I eventually caught up with him in the spring and knocked him down at 30 yards.

Thats an incredible picture, but are you crazy! That takes a lot of guts to do something like that! But don't be a foolish hunter. No trophie is worth your life! You can't hang them on the wall if your livin in the ground! From one Pennsylvainian to another,be smart and safe out there!Your doing something that I will only dream about doing.Good luck in the woods and on the water!cgbrun2
