Hello All,
I went on a hunt yesterday afternoon (10/30/09) in the Missouri River Bottom near Fort Peck, Montana. On the way in, we glassed a lot of mule doe's but no bucks. We parked and started to hike down towards the river and noticed a small group of mule deer about 3 hundred yards ahead. We followed them don within 100 yards. We could see a large bodied mule deer, but we could not get a fix on the antler situation. We glassed him for about 35 minutes as the group of one 2x2 and 4 does walked around us. We finally were able to tell that the long horn, though short had velvet. I decided I would take this buck because it looked different. After he was down, I was quite surprised when I walked up on him. I thought his antler bases were covered with burr's, but that was not the case. He broke his longest beam when he went down, turned out the antlers are extremly light and fragile. With some online looking, I found this is called a "Cactus Buck". A truly awesome hunt for me this year. Hope everyone enjoys the pictures.
Cheers,

Very interesting - Did you find out anything about what causes this deformity?
