    Beach Adventure !!

    Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 08:07 PM [General]

The Island of St. Martin is like many beautiful Caribbean Islands - great beaches, gorgeous weather, fantastic scenery and much more ! When I visited the island a few years ago, I did all the usual tourist stuff, checked out the casinos, beaches,
    scuba diving, shopping, etc.

I told my family I was going to "inspect" the nude beach. They were surprised at my interest knowing I'm basically a shy guy.
Well, to make a long story short, when I arrived at the nude beach I was pleasantly surprised to see it was 200+ yards long.A group of 6 "nudists" for lack of a better word were at one end so I went to the other end. I took off all of my clothes and ran out into the water up to my waste. I looked all around and to myself, " OK, I now can say I visited a nude beach ! "  I got out of the water, laid down on my towel and took in the beautiful weather. Within 5 minutes 2 very attractive women approached me and made themselves compfortable. Well, I was very "uncompfortable" !!  My goal was just to be able to say " I went to a nude beach " to my friends - not to exhibit myself or look at nude women !  Although I am an "all American Male" !!!!

I laid there for awhile debating what I should do? Go back into the water up to my waste, turnover to lay on my back or lay on my chest, find my darker sun glasses so they don't see my eyes, or just leave?? !!  As I'm thinking all of this one woman, the closest one to me, asked if I'm a regular there or a nudist because I had no tan lines. (The tanning beds at my health club were beneficial after all.)  I said no, I was just a tourist. She said she marveled at my tan buffed body. I BLUSHED !!  She then commented she had just arrived to the Island to be a nurse at the local Hospital and could she "move closer to talk" !!  I politely said I was leaving !!  I felt like saying " Young lady, " I just wanted to say I visited a nude beach ! " But I said nothing, put my eyes back into their sockets and left with a big smile !!

    Alligator Hunt !!

    Monday, May 18, 2009, 03:33 PM [General]

My Alligator Adventure !! Fair warning - Not for the faint of Heart  !!!!!!

Alligator hunting with bow & arrow is a real challenge and I like to hunt things that can bite back for that additional "thrill" ! My test of nerves and skill began recently near the Florida Everglades on a hot July night. With a hurricane reported just miles off the coast my outfiiter and I glided across the swamps in a metal boat propelled by a huge powerful fan. We where headed towards lightning bolts both beautiful and scary !! We commented to each other how our objective  must be fast because of the lightning and successful because the hurricane could shut things down for several days. It seems lightning bolts and a metal boat on water just don't mix - go figure !!  My mission was to connect with a 10 foot plus gator, a life long dream, to add to my trophies (Mountain Lion, several Bears, wild Russian Boar, African Kudu and a few others) !!  Plus, the bonus of several hundred pounds of "gator tail" meat to share with family and friends. For those who are curious, it tasted like a fishy chicken breast !!

After seeing dozens of gators small and large most of which would dive under the water as we got close,  although many were aggressive and rammed our boat with their large heads. My task was to put two arrows with 300 lb nylon cords attached, so the outfitter and I could fight and fatigue the gator. The outfiter would then put a bullet in the gators brain with what is called a "bang stick" because it's impossible to kill a gator any other way. The bang stick is like a cane with a "44 magmum bullet" shot out the end. With the successful placement of two arrows in the back of a mean looking 10 foot plus gator our work finally began. The strangest part was reaching in the water for the cord not knowing for sure where the gator or should I say his mouth was !! We fought and played tug of "WAR" for over 15 minutes until the reptile beast was exhausted. The outfitter than measured and placed the bang stick where the alligators brain "should have been". With no luck after 2 bullets shot the guide apologized and said " in 20 years of hunting gators to control the population he never had a problem killing one this way" !!  With the lightning getting closer and closer to us I volunteered to use the hunting knife I always carry on my hip. I thought since he had already put two holes thru the gators skull, I would use the knife to finish off this mean stubborn alligator. The guide said, " go ahead, but don't forget he is still alive and your hands will be near his mouth" !!  So with much trepidation and excitement I placed the knife blade in the bang stick holes and I was able to complete my adventure. My hands are totally OK and I "tested my nerves and skills more than I anticipated" !!  Whew  !!

The top skin of an alligator is all boney and of no basic use for anything. The bottom hide however can be made into "leather" for boots, shoes, vests, hats, etc.  I've decided a vest would be perfect for me and will have one made very soon.

Oh, one more thing. As I traveled across the State of Florida for many days, workers at the airport, gas stations, restaurants, etc. all complained about the number of large gators around and how two people where recently killed and eaton by gators !!

I hope you enjoyed my adventure  as much as I did !!
