went back out to 3 lakes and the only buck i saw was on the road on the drive in at 5 am. i did see 2 does at 7 am. finished moving my ladder stand. put up shooting rail and camo burlap. sat there for the afternoon hunt but did not see anything. will hit it again next week. i stay away from wma's on the weekends. to many weekenders. during the week it seems i have the whole 26,000 acres to myself.
thursday morning hunt
well i went out to 3 lakes wma this morning and it was nice to hunt cool weather in fla for once. i saw 6 does and heard some hogs squeeling. i checked a couple old scrapes and to my surprise they still looked active. so i am going to continue to hunt the bigger one and i moved my ladder stand from the other one to the edge of a very large cypress swamp were there are many rubs. i have not hunted this spot before. it looks real good. though i did shoot a 6 point last year about 6 or 7 hundred yards to the south of this area.
2008 hunting season
well archery (9/20-10/19)was almost a bust. here in east central florida we hunt around thick palmetto fields and cypress swamps. i shot 2 hogs opening morning 30 minutes apart. 1 around 50 lbs the 2nd around 150lbs. both ran to the swamp and i lost the trail on both of them. that sucked!!!
then 1 week later i had 4 does feeding in on me that split into 2 groups of 2. the first 2 came right in as the other 2 held back. i had a 7 yard shot straight down and drilled one of the does. good shot the arrow went through and stuck in the ground completly covered in blood. the deer ran right and i thought i heard her crash(alright!). then i looked up and the other 2 were coming in also. i drew another arrow as they came in one deer was smelling the tip of the arrow that was in the ground that had passed through the first deer and i shot that one as well. same thing arrow went though and stuck in the ground 12 inches from the first arrow(sweet!!!) 2 deer on the ground.(so i thought). i waited about 30 minutes. i started tracking the first deer and had good blood trail for a short distance then nothing. i went to track the second deer and the same thing. what the hell!!!! this has never happend to me before. i looked for both deer for about 3 hours never found them(sucks!!!!) and in this florida heat if you dont find em right away........
next i had a nice buck come in on me the week after that. i was still early in the morning. first light. about 15 yard shot broadside. it was a good hit. and hour later i tracked that deer with good blood for about 250yards to the swamp where i lost it as well. i was beginning to think i should give up bow hunting. i have never lost deer like this before.
now its the last week end of archery. i had a doe and a spike come in on me and bed down about 45 yards out. they got up about an hour later and were headed for wma fence line where i hunt. they were'nt going to come in. so i mouth grunted and got them to stop. i took about a 47yard shot and drilled that spike alittle off the shoulder and hit him in the lower neck. he went down like a rock(sweet). meat in the freezer at last!!!
now its muzzleloader season(11/1-11/9). my wife and i go to west tenn.(about 2 hours west of nash.)to a family farm(around 200 acres total). the rut is in full swing there then. i hunted 4 days and shot a 3 point,a doe, then a 6 point(the pics are in the gallery). saw 2 bucks that were 8 points or better but could not get on them(maybe next year).
well i am back in florida and our riffle season has started. i will be going back to my archery spot thursday and friday to hunt the buck that was making many rubs and scrapes all around back in october. our rut is over here so it might be alittle harder to find these bucks. at least we had a cold front come in and i wont have to hunt in the heat. should be around 42 degress in the morning(yahoo).
